US dominates Rio Olympics medal tally

The Rio Olympics closed on Sunday putting an end to two weeks of sport events. As expected, the United States won most medals, including the gold in basketball on the closing day.

US won a total of 121 medals - 46 gold, 37 silver and 38 bronze ones. In an unexpectedly good showing, the United Kingdom was second, with 27 gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze medals. China is third, with one hold less than the British.

Russia, which had scores of athletes suspended due to doping, ranks fourth and Germany is fifth. A total of 87 countries had competitors win medals. In the Balkans, Croatia did best, ranked 17th with 5 gold medals, 3 silver and 2 bronze ones.
