China does not believe there is a risk to February’s Beijing Winter Olympics from the emergence of the Omicron coronavirus variant.
Heavy pandemic restrictions on athletes, officials and journalists had already been put in place for the February 4-20 Games even before scientists discovered the possibly more infectious variant.
While there may be “some challenges,” it is expected that the Winter Games “can be held smoothly and successfully,” a Beijing Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.
Quarantine, bubbles, regular testing and a ban on foreign fans are all part of China‘s plan for the Olympics.
On Tuesday, authorities in China registered 21 coronavirus infections.
