Djokovic to stay overnight in Melbourne with appeal set for Friday

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic is set to spend the night in Melbourne after his visa to enter Australia was revoked and his lawyers sought an appeal.

A court has not yet received the application to challenge the cancellation of the visa, the Australian news agency AAP reported on Thursday.

The 34-year-old world number one and defending champion was supposed to start his journey home on Thursday but Judge Anthony Kelly said he expected a decision on an appeal would not be reached until Friday.

Djokovic had travelled to the first grand slam of the year after tournament organizers gave him a medical exemption to the rule which states all players must be vaccinated against Covid-19. But border officials said he had not provided adequate evidence to meet entry requirements.
