Igor Stefanovski has admitted his Race 2 crash took the shine off his breakthrough victory in the FIA European Touring Car Cup at Imola on Sunday, reads the ETCC website.
Stefanovski, a multiple FIA European Hillclimb champion, triumphed in the opening counter at the former San Marino Grand Prix venue.
However, a clash with Claudio Truffer in Race 2 sent him crashing into retirement and left his new ASK Lein Racing team with a badly damaged SEAT to repair.
“It’s the first time I win in the ETCC and with this new team, Lein Racing,” said Stefanovski. “I have a good car and a good team and I win this race. In the second race one driver hit me and I don’t know what happened, that’s it. I don’t finish the race. The car is damaged but I am okay. It was a stupid mistake by these guys because I don’t finish this race.”
Stefanovski is believed to be the first driver from Macedonia to win an FIA-championship car race. The victory promoted him to P10 in the final ETCC standings.
